CRFA Update
Health Canada posted draft sodium reduction targets for packaged foods last week.
As this target-setting process is complex, Health Canada is seeking feedback on its draft levels. The objective is to ensure proposed targets are substantive and realistic in achieving the public health goal of reducing dietary sodium intakes while considering potential technical or transitional issues.
These packaged food targets will underlie the sodium reduction levels for the foodservice sector, to be drafted this spring. Health Canada is collecting baseline data on the sodium content of restaurant food, also to be used in developing foodservice targets.

Sodium reduction targets for food sold in Canada are being established in response to the Sodium Working Group’s (SWG’s) recommendations. Click here for the SWG’s final report, “Sodium Reduction Strategy for Canada.”
