Labour Minister Jennifer Howard recently announced two new initiatives that affect Manitoba workplaces – safety and accessibility. CRFA will participate in discussions on both initiatives to ensure our members’ concerns are represented.

Safety

First, the Workplace Safety and Health Act is being amended to protect workers from psychological harassment and violence in the workplace. Once the regulations take effect on Feb. 1, 2011, employers will be required to implement various measures that protect employees from workplace harassment and violence. The regulation is modelled on similar rules in Saskatchewan.

Accessibility

Second, the province is holding consultations on new legislation to improve accessibility for, and defend rights of, Manitobans with disabilities. Similar to the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the government plans to implement new measures over a long period. All Manitobans are encouraged to take part in the consultation process.
